The RoboCup is an international initiative for the support of and research in the areas of artificial intelligence and autonomous mobile robots. Since 1997, the umbrella organisation RoboCup Federation has held an Annual World Championship of Intelligent Robots, which aims at the exchange of creative ideas and the further development of robotic systems.
The first world championship took place in 1997 in Nagoya, Japan and since then, the world’s largest robot event has been held in cities such as Paris, Melbourne, Stockholm, Seattle, Bremen and Atlanta.
For the first time, this exciting event will now take place in Austria in 2009. Between 29 June and 5 July 2009, the world’s best robot teams will be competing for the world championship title in five soccer contests, in two rescue robot and one service robot leagues. In addition, students from all over the world will compete in three junior challenges. Over 3,000 participants from 40 countries are expected in Graz for the competitions and technology demonstrations at the world's largest and most important robot event.
