SWAN LAKE The Acrobatics Sensation from the Far East

24.02.2010

The acrobatics-ballet SWAN LAKE offers one of the most spectacular interpretations of Tchaikovsky’s ‘Swan Lake’ seen so far. On their two tours, they inspired the 175,000 spectators to minute-long standing ovations and enthralled the TV-audiences of ’Wetten, dass …? [You want to bet…]’, ‘Verstehen Sie Spass? [Can you take a joke?] ‘ and the ‘Adventsfest der Volksmusik [Advent Party of Folk Music]’. Now a third tour of this innovative production will follow.

An evil sorcerer has cursed a swan princess and only true love can set her free – a story known in many cultures and set to music by Pjotr Tchaikovsky. The first performance of this ballet took place at Moscow‘s Bolshoi Theatre in 1877 and since then, ‘Swan Lake‘ has been a permanent feature of all classic ballet companies.

A new interpretation is now offered by the best acrobats of the Far East: With their inherent perfection, they tell the story with a performance on the edge of what is humanely possible. Gravity seems suspended when four ‘frogs‘ dance on their hands across the stage for minutes on end, artists on metre-long poles perform acrobatics at dizzying heights, and especially when the princess dances and slowly turns pirouettes first on the back of her beloved prince, then on his shoulders and finally even on his head. The diminutive, gracious heroine who is able to imitate the wing-beat of a swan with her legs with uncanny precision and her always elegant but nevertheless powerful partner never let the audience see the tremendous effort that is concealed behind their masterly performance. The artistic performance is incorporated in a production combining power, perfection and poetry in an unbelievably enchanting way. The dream-like stage setting affects everybody in the audience: Forest scenes lit in dark blue, green-yellow cave motives, an over-dimensional steering wheel radiating calm blue, in front of which the artists seem to waltz in gyro-wheels – SWAN LAKE combines ballet and artistic performance in a world-wide unique show.
